Alex Skolnick, guitarrista principal de Testament, comentó en entrevista para Me Hace Ruido sobre Veritas que es el nuevo lanzamiento de su proyecto de jazz Alex Skolnick Trio.
A casi cuatro meses de haber salido el álbum Veritas, ¿Cómo se sienten tú y tus músicos hasta ahora comparando las expectativas que tenían durante el tiempo que se encontraban componiendo, grabando y planeando éste nuevo álbum?
Alex Skolnick: Estamos muy contentos con las buenas críticas y la respuesta de nuestros seguidores. En general, la reacción de los escuchas dentro y fuera de la industria de la música es tremenda. Al mismo tiempo, parece estar tomando algo de tiempo el tratar de colocar el álbum para una audiencia más amplia. Sin embargo, en éste momento estamos atravesando por un impulso en nuestro equipo que parece ser bastante positivo. También estamos cerca de finalmente sacar nuestro primer video. Entonces, aunque el CD tiene algunos meses de haber salido, se siente como si el ciclo del álbum estuviera a punto de comenzar.
Es bien sabido que el descargar música gratis a través de algunos sitios de internet afecta a muchos artistas hoy en día, por otra parte esto también confirma que aún hay mucha gente ahí fuera que está interesada en la búsqueda de música; sin embargo no utilizan los medios apropiados para obtenerla por éste tipo de websites. ¿Crees que existe algún tipo de rescate a éste daño que ha causado el fenómeno de descargas gratis a la industria de la música y a muchos artistas alrededor del Mundo?
Alex Skolnick: Espero que sí, pero no estoy seguro. Parece que toda la industria ha cambiado dramáticamente. Solía suceder que si tú eras un talento marginado, tenías la suerte de tener una carrera musical, pero aún era posible. Si tú eras un talento indiscutible, las ventajas eran bastante buenas de que tuvieras una gran carrera a menos que cometieras errores terribles (drogas, alcohol, mala representación Pública, etc). Ahora, aparentemente puedes ser indiscutiblemente talentoso, profesional y estar por encima del juego y aún así es muy, pero muy difícil sobrevivir a través de tu música. No todo es causado por las descargar gratis pero si son gran parte de esto. Yo pienso que el interés por la música sigue tan fuerte como siempre pero tiene que haber un nuevo sistema que ponga un orden para que no sea casi imposible el sobrevivir de los músicos emergentes.
Aparte de los planes para promocionar Veritas éste año, ¿Tienes algún otro plan como producir o colaborar en grabaciones de otros artistas; unirte a una gira con Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO) o con Testament por lo que resta del último semestre del 2011, o te gustaría enfocarte solamente en Alex Skolnick Trio (AST) para el 2011?
Alex Skolnick: Creo estaremos de gira y promoviendo Veritas aún más cuando el álbum de Testament salga, porque de esa manera será más sencillo el coordinar los trabajos de ambos proyectos. Hay planes de salir de gira con Testament y de grabar un nuevo álbum con ellos. Testament tiene ya hecha la estructura de su gira y estará en México el 10 de Agosto (Circo Volador). Sin embargo, no estaré de gira con Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO) éste año – son tres meses de trabajo intenso los cuáles, con preparación y tiempo de recuperación, son más como cuatro meses y eso es mucho tiempo y energía alejado de mis otros proyectos.
¿Hay planes para Alex Skolnick Trio (AST) para ir de gira por México y/o algún otro país de Latinoamérica?
Alex Skolnick: Absolutamente lo queremos. Salió una oferta para tocar en México y tan pronto como tengamos una oferta para hacer un tour latinoamericano completo que compagine con la agenda de Testament, lo tomaremos.
Veritastiene el balance perfecto que un disco tiene que tener: excelentes composiciones, buen sentimiento y fabulosas vibras, ritmo fantástico y muy lindos sonidos. ¿Cómo haces para cuidar hasta el más mínimo detalle en un disco, desde la idea de la carátula del CD y obtener un disco con todo bien hecho?
Alex Skolnick: Gracias. Realmente aplico mis propios estándares a esto, enfocándome en la música que disfruto escuchar. ¿Cómo creo música con ese tipo de energía y el tipo de música que me gusta de otra gente? Viene de enfocarse en una canción a la vez. Un álbum es un gran proyecto pero también es una combinación de varios pequeños. Es importante no perder esto de vista. Tienes que ver de manera simultánea la gran foto y los pequeños pasos, el bosque y los árboles. Esto también te ayuda a planear los diferentes tipos de canciones y asegurar que el álbum tenga una variedad suficiente para que resulte interesante. Por ejemplo, nunca quieres tener muchos temas con exactamente el mismo tiempo y ritmo. Hay algunos álbumes grandiosos que tienen un ritmo específico (funk, bossa nova, tango, reggae, etc…) y que aún así manejan tener una variedad en diferentes tonalidades, tiempos, texturas, sensaciones, etc… Por lo que en un proyecto como éste, que es tan amplio ¡No hay excusa para no tener un buen balance!

Alex Skolnick, main guitar of TESTAMENT, commented on interview to Me Hace Ruido about Veritas which is the new release from his Jazz project Alex Skolnick Trio.
With almost 4 months since Veritas album was released, how do you and your band mates feel so far comparing the expectations you all had during the time you were composing, recording and planning this new album?
Alex Skolnick: We are very happy with the great reviews and responses from fans. The overall reaction from listeners in and out of the music industry is tremendous. At the same time, it seems to be taking a while to get the album to a wider reaching audience. However, we are experiencing a shift in our team right now that looks very positive. We are also close to finally releasing our first video. So even though the CD has been out for a few months, it feels as though the album cycle is just about to begin.
It’s well known that free music downloads through some internet websites affects lot of artists nowadays, by the other hand this also confirms that there are still many people out there whom are interested in looking for music; however they don’t use the proper ways to obtain this from these kinds of websites. Do you think there is any sort of rescue in the near future for this damaged that the entire free download phenomenon has caused to the music industry and lot of artists around the World?
Alex Skolnick: I hope so, but I’m not sure. It seems like the whole industry has changed dramatically. It used to be that if you were marginally talented, it took luck to have a music career, but it was still possible. If you were undeniably talented, the odds were pretty good that you’d have a big career unless you made terrible mistakes (drugs, alcohol, bad PR etc…). Now, it seems like you can be undeniably talented, professional and at the top of the game and it’s still very, very difficult to survive through your music. It’s not all because of free downloading but that’s a big part of it. I think interest in music is as strong as ever but some new system is going to have to be put in place so that it’s not nearly impossible to survive for emerging musicians.
Besides Veritas promotion plans for this year. Do you have any other plans like produce or collaborate in recordings of other artists; to join TSO or Testament for a tour the rest of the last semester of 2011 or would you like to focus only on AST for 2011
Alex Skolnick: I believe we’ll be touring and promoting Veritas even more once Testament’s album is out, because that way it will be easier to coordinate the efforts of both projects. There are plans to tour with Testament and to record a new album with them. Testament has the structure in place to tour and will go to Mexico Aug 10 (Circo Volador). However, I won’t be touring with TSO this year- it is three months of intense work which, with preparation and recovery time, is more like four months and that’s too much time and energy away from my other projects.
Any plans for AST to go on tour for Mexico and/or other Countries in Latin America?
Alex Skolnick: We absolutely want to. There’s been an offer to come to Mexico and as soon as we get an offer to do a full fledged Latin American tour that works around Testament’s schedule, we will take it.
Veritas has the perfect balance of what a record must have: excellent compositions, good feeling and great vibes, fantastic rhythm and very nice sounds. How do you handle to look for each small detail on a record, from the idea to the cover of the CD, and to have a record with everything well done?
Alex Skolnick: Thank you. I really just apply my own standards to it, focusing on the music that I enjoy listening to. How do I create music that has that kind of energy, the type I appreciate in other peoples’ music? It comes down to focusing on one song at a time. An album is one big project but it’s also a combination of many small ones. It’s important to not lose sight of that. You simultaneously have to see the big picture and the small steps, the forest and the trees. It also helps to map out different types of songs and make sure the album has enough variety to be interesting. For example, you never want to have too many tunes with the exact same tempo and rhythm. There are great albums that are rhythm- specific ( funk, bossa nova, tango, reggae, etc…) that still manage to have variety through different keys, tempos, textures, moods etc…. So in a project like this, that is so wide open, there is no excuse to not have a good balance!
